Straw Bale Cottage, Farm Experience Holiday, Mid Wales

The Straw Cottage - About the Straw Cottage Experience

Straw Bale Cottage Holiday, an unusual place to stay in Llandrindod Wells, Mid Wales. The ultimate get away, The Straw Cottage is truly far from the madding crowd, a straw bale cottage in an idyllic spot on the farm. Wake up to the sound of birdsong, go to sleep to the sound of Holly Brook, breakfast outside with just the meadow flowers and the hills for company.  This is the romance of a bygone era with 2016 comfort.  Come for a special break for just the two of you, stars, champagne and total peace. Or if you are bringing the family, see your children experience a different kind of enjoyment in discovering the pleasures of messing about in the stream, seeing the farm animals and making their own entertainment.Double bedroom

Staying in The Straw Cottage is a memorable experience, away from the modern world, no modern gadgets, no electrics, nature at the door, views, dark skies, stars, sitting around the barbeque, de- stressing and relaxing.  However we think that you will appreciate the comfort of The Straw Cottage – sleep in a lovely comfy bed, have a shower, be warm and cosy if the weather is not ideal. The cottage has been built using centuries old building methods.  The walls are made of straw bales, and then coated with lime mortar inside and out.  The roof insulation is sheep’s wool and the roof is covered with cedar shingles. Inside, the cottage has two double bedrooms, one has twin beds, and the other has a double bed. There is a shower and a normal flushing W.C. in the bathroom.

A large sitting room with wood burner leads out onto the veranda.  There is a kitchen area with sink with hot and cold water, gas oven and hob and gas cool box.

Heating comes from the wood burner, hot water and cooking is by gas. Lighting is by candle, lantern, gas lights and solar. Wind up torches are also supplied.

Close by the cottage is a barbeque pit and a slightly further away is a place to have a bonfire, roasted marshmallows on a stick or cooked spuds in the cinders?

The main room

The cottage sits on the edge of Ben’s Wood, a small wood that has been coppiced so it is light and airy with dappled sun and bluebells in the spring time. In front of the cottage the ground gently slopes down to the field and the stream, with views to the far hills.  In the wood are several bird boxes, home to a variety of birds including woodpeckers, tree creepers and blue tits.

If you have children, there are endless things for them to enjoy – messing about in the stream, pond dipping, identifying the flowers and birds, seeing the farm livestock, or just playing in the wood using the trees and rope swings and making their own fun. They can have a go at the treasure hunt around the farm or try the wildlife quiz.Having fun on the swing

In front of the cottage is a large flat area of field, plenty big enough for a game of cricket or rounders (don’t hit your ball into the stream!).The farm lane is very quiet; rarely do we see a car, so they can ride their bikes without the worry of traffic. You might choose to wander around the farm or go for a more energetic walk across the hills and far away or perhaps just sit outside to snooze and read.  The night time is dark, you can see the moon and stars far away from any light pollution.

Is your stay for a special event? An anniversary, birthday, honeymoon or your children’s birthday?  See what we can offer to make it a memorable occasion

Granary Cottage

“OUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO STAY!” This was our second stay (and, hopefully, not the last by a long way) at Straw Cottage and we loved it just as much this Spring as last Summer. It is the best place I've ever found to give ourselves a much needed break from the pressures of modern life, yet it is still comfortable, cosy and just lovely. We kept nice and warm on the squashy sofas around the log burning stove in the evenings and played many family board games. During the day, we made outdoor fires in the fire pit, the kids and the dog played in the stream and the woods and rode their bikes, while the adults relaxed on the porch with books, magazines and guitar playing. And we all love the tree swing! Thank you to the lovely hosts, Margot and Anthony, for providing such a wonderful holiday experience.
